Notes: The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson

art of not giving a fuck

I read this book- The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck

Here are some notes:

  • Happiness comes from caring about something greater than yourself
  • Confronting death obliterates crappy, fragile, superficial values of life
  • We are responsible for everything in our own life, no matter external circumstances. We don’t always control what happens to us, but we control how we interpret and respond.
  • Are you in love with the result? or the process? You need to love the process. That’s why people don’t realize their “dreams”, they just love the result, they don’t actually want it if they don’t love the process
  •  Negative emotions = call to action to do something
  • True happiness occurs only when you find the problems you enjoy having and enjoy solving (e.g. finding good food, growing a business, raising a family)
  • Problems never stop, they merely get exchanged and/or upgraded. Happiness comes from solving problems. If you’re avoiding problems or feel like you don’t have any problems or have “unsolvable” problems, then you’re going to feel miserable. Secret is solving problems, not avoiding them
  • Happiness is therefore a form of action, an activity, not something that is bestowed
  • If you don’t have meaningful things to give fucks about, you will find meaningless things to give fucks about (#firstworldproblems) – you can never not give a fuck
  • Desire for positive experience = negative experience, acceptance of one’s negative experience = positive experience
